Renewables will be left out of the Energy Bill

The Senate Democratic leaders are advocating a proposal to House negotiators and environmental leaders that would leave renewable energy entirely out of energy legislation.  From numerous meetings and conversations, it now appears that Senate leaders are seriously considering a plan to move energy legislation without a tax title that extends (or creates new) solar and wind tax credits.

The renewable industry is, in effect, being thrown out of the energy bill for fear that the tax title and/or the Renewable Portfolio Standards would sink the Senate effort which is apparently built around retaining an increase in motor vehicle fuel economy.

Please Act Now

We have a short window right now to make our voices heard.  If we can generate an outcry from consumers like you, we may have a chance for renewable energy to be included in this legislation.

Please contact your local members of Congress and ask them to contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  They should urge her to reject the Senate proposal and insist that energy legislation includes support for clean renewable energy.  And please call or email your Senators, asking each to urge majority leader Reid not to settle for legislation that does not promote renewable energy.

Below is a short list of key Senators and House members who are especially important to reach because of their role in this decision or their influence with Congressional leadership.

On the House side, Representatives:

  • Steny Hoyer (D-MD)
  • Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)
  • George Miller (D-CA)
  • Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

On the Senate side the list includes Senators:

  • Maria Cantwell (D-WA)
  • Chuck Schumer (D-NY)
  • Byron Dorgan (D-ND)
  • Barbara Boxer (D-CA)
  • Richard Durbin (D-IL)

If you are located in one of their states, or have a direct or indirect connection, it is crucially important that you convey your concern to these key officials right away.
