The US Ambassador to the Maldives calls on the President

In the meeting held this afternoon, Ambassador Blake noted the close relations existing between the United States and the Maldives and spoke on further strengthening the ties between the two countries. Ambassador Blake briefed the President on the work being done to further consolidate the commercial and educational ties between the United States and the Maldives. He said that work is underway to provide information for potential Maldivian students who wish to study in the United States.
The US Ambassador also spoke on the Environmental issues facing the Maldives and assured the President that the US Government will offer assistance to the Maldives in all possible ways. He further highlighted the technological assistance given by an American Company to the pilot project to generate Wind and Solar energy organised by the STO in three islands. Ambassador thanked the President for his endeavour to bring the environmental issues of the country, global warming and sea level rise and related environmental hazards to the attention of the global community.
Speaking at the meeting, the President highlighted the friendly relations between the United States and the Maldives, and thanked the US Government for the assistance and support given to the Maldives in various fields. He also noted with appreciation, the generous assistance and support given by the US Government to the Maldives during the Tsunami Disaster, and also thanked for the aid given under the Indian Ocean Tsunami Relief Emergency Operation Project. The Project supports the establishment of sewerage systems, harbours and the electricity generation and water and sanitation activities in some islands.
The President briefed the Ambassador on the progress of the Reform Agenda. He also provided the US Ambassador with information about the recent referendum held to decide the form of Government in the Maldives.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of President’s Office, Dr. Hala Hameed, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dhunya Maumoon and First Secretary, Head of Economic Affairs of the Embassy of the United States of America, Mr. Robert Gabore.
