CEDAR CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation is continuing its initiative to explore renewable energy sources, with the activation of a wind turbine in Milford.

The Skystream wind turbine, which sits atop a 45-foot tower at the UDOT maintenance station in Milford, can generate an average of 1,800 watts of electricity and is tied directly into the power grid.

The cost to install the turbine was approximately $14,000 and it is expected to supply approximately 40 percent of the station’s power use.

UDOT also commissioned a 3,200-watt solar-powered system in Murray last fall, and agency officials say they are looking at additional sites for renewable energy throughout the state.
