Morgan Hill homeowner John Scrempos will have the first residential turbine (far right) in Santa Clara County connected to the electrical grid. It is the first turbine sold by Morgan Hill-based Fresco Solar.

A new wind turbine in Morgan Hill is churning up the dormant market for residential wind power in Santa Clara County.

John and Diane Scrempos hooked their 52-foot-tall turbine into the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. grid on March 28. It was the first residential turbine in the county to be connected to the grid, and the first turbine to be sold by Morgan Hill-based Fresco Solar, an outdoor-living contractor that switched its business focus to alternative energy at the end of the summer.

"It's early days still," says Sean Kenny, founder and CEO of privately owned Fresco Solar. "This installation will give us data we can use to help other people go on this path."

Kenny is banking on the data from the Scremposes' turbine to persuade others to take advantage of the wind in Coyote Valley, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and San Martin. He expects the Scremposes' turbine to draw energy for eight to 10 hours a day for the next four months.
