David Calley and Andy Kruse opened Southwest Windpower in 1987, and they have been trying to change the world ever since.
The Flagstaff company is the world's leading manufacturer of small-wind generators. The company's mission is to help people who don't have access to conventional sources of electricity as well to make a less-polluting alternative for those who do.
In the past 20 years, it has sold 100,000 of its wind generators to home and business owners around the world.
"I could see the potential for a unique international business opportunity, which not only could make money but help change the world at the same time," says Kruse, co-founder and vice president of business development, of his industry.
The company's Skystream 3.7 system was recently named a 2007 Top Green Building Product by Sustainable Industries magazine.
"Interest in small wind is growing rapidly," says Miriam Robbins, Southwest Windpower marketing manager. "This is mainly due to rising energy costs, concerns of climate change and people wanting to be able to take control over their own energy."
