Wind powered car surpasses three Guinness Book of World Records

It’s amazing to think that a breeze on a sunny day can turn into something powerful enough to create electricity to run our homes. What other super powers does wind have? In our series "What can wind do?" we will explore unique ways wind is changing our world.

Two German men and their wind powered car have surpassed several Guinness Book of World Records in their trip across Australia. The vehicle is the first of its kind to cross the Southern Australia in a wind powered car, complete the longest distance travelled in a 36 hour period and travel the most distance overall in a wind powered car.

How does the car harness the wind to make such an efficient and record breaking journey? In the evening, the team sets up their Whisper, a personal wind turbine from Southwest Windpower’s line of off-grid turbines, to generate power that recharges the car’s battery overnight. Throughout the day the car runs off the battery or even uses a kite for extra power generation if needed. Check it out:
