Net metering: Saving on electricity by selling it back

Net metering: Saving on electricity by selling it back

When your wind turbine is supplementing the power that you receive from the local utility, you may have the opportunity to take advantage of net metering. What is net metering? The program allows you to offset your electric bill by selling electricity back to your utility when your personal wind turbine produces more energy than is needed.

Net metering policies vary by state and utility company. Each program specifies how they handle net excess generation (NEG) in terms of payment, or length of time allowed for credit.

Check with your local utility and state government to determine how net metering programs are handled in your area.
