Check local regulations before installing a wind turbine

In our “Is Wind for You?" series we will discuss frequently asked questions and concerns when it comes to purchasing and installing a personal wind turbine.

If you are considering a renewable energy option for your home or property, keep in mind that not everyone has jumped on the energy-efficiency bandwagon. It’s important to do your research and make sure there are not any covenant restrictions for your neighborhood, or local government permit requirements that may prohibit the construction of towers and/or turbines.

If you belong to a homeowner’s association, be sure to check the guidelines relating to towers or tall structures. Once you get the go-ahead from them, contact your local county Planning and Zoning Authority about the installation of towers on your property. Remember, the tower must be 20 feet or six meters above any surrounding object to be effective.
